(Title Sponsor: Urban Renewal Authority)
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and the Business-School Partnership Programme of the Education Bureau are jointly organising the “Smart City Model Building Competition” with the aims to encourage secondary school students to take an interest in engineering for their future careers through a real-life practical application.  Each team will work on a project to identify a specific problem in smart city development, propose an engineering solution, and showcase their solution through a built model.  Three awards, for the Champion, First runner-up, Second runner-up, and three merit awards will be given to the winning teams.
To enhance students’ engineering knowledge and skills
To provide an opportunity for students to show their care for the community
To cultivate students’ interest in the engineering profession
To understand what engineers do, thus helping students to plan for their future studies
All full time students from S3 to S5 are eligible to apply
Each team must include one teacher and three to five students
Each school can enroll one team only
Details of the Competition
The organiser will assign a study topic for each team based on their preferences or by a random draw. In developing Hong Kong into a smart city, students are encouraged to identify potential areas in which to enhance their living environment and to come up with feasible engineering solutions to do so. The suggested areas of study include:
Efficient Transportation System
Land supply
Environmental issues
Infrastructure development
Green community development
Efficient energy use
The organiser will assign an engineering professional for each team to act as a facilitator and to provide professional advice throughout the programme. Within their study area, each team of students will be asked to identify a specific problem in the smart city development process, propose their engineering solutions, and build a model of their concept. The organiser will reimburse each team for any spending on the programme (up to a maximum of HK$500 per team).  Teams must submit all original receipts for reimbursement. The maximum number of participating teams is 15. If the number of applications exceeds this number, participating teams will be selected by random draw. All participating students will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the programme. The winning teams will be awarded various prizes and invited to showcase their models at the HKIE Fiesta, to be held on Sunday, 11 June 2017.
Selection Criteria
The Panel of Judges will comprise representatives from the Education Bureau and the HKIE. The winning teams will be selected based on their presentation skills, their creativity and the technical feasibility of the model.
